(Re: Stop the plans to transfer patients to long-term-care homes, Toronto Star, Aug. 31)

With respect, the Toronto Star's Aug. 31 editorial is mistaken. It states that the solution must come from “improving the quality of (long-term care) homes … and ensuring (they) … meet a satisfactory standard of care.”

But a tottering long-term care system cannot be fixed: it must be replaced.

Many experts and advocates have argued that the solution lies in expanding and improving home and community care alternatives. Other countries have taken this sustainable approach.

Just as the Titanic could not be saved by shuffling deck chairs, long-term care homes cannot be saved by shuffling beds.

Stop doing it and turn to proven alternatives.
